Community spirit at the heart of Joe's Jog family fun run Mile 2024
Joe's Jog, the annual family fun run mile, now in its nineth year, attracted a record 468 runners and raised a fantastic £2252 to support the ongoing work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).
The race was started by Paul Nixon, the former Leicestershire, Kent and England cricketer & coach. Paul Nixon said: "I've have wanted to attend and be part of Joe's Jog for many years, sadly because of cricket commitments over the years it hasn't been possible. Finally, I was able to attend and feel the passion, energy and enthusiasm of this wonderful event. Cheered on by so many spectators it was wonderful sight to see the beaming smiles on people's faces, raising funds and having some much fun running together for Joe's amazing charity."
'One-stop' clinics put patients at heart
Two new nurse-led clinics have been opened, to increase Leicester's Hospitals' capacity to save lives by detecting inherited cardiac conditions (ICCs).
With the help of local charity, the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JMHT), family screening and diagnostic genetic testing services have been established at Glenfield Hospital, which will support individuals with diagnosed ICCs and their family members under the leadership of Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Harshil Dhutia.
ICC Clinical Nurse Specialist, Chloe Ferguson, whose role was funded by JHMT, said: "We are striving to create a 'one-stop clinic', increasing our screening capacity and support for families and easing some of the processes a family affected by an ICC will go through. Our patients can be young and active and might need to make changes to their lifestyles, to keep themselves safe."
Life-saving defibrillator installed at the Outwoods, Charnwood
Charles Poole, Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, said: "With the Outwoods being such a popular destination for people of all ages to enjoy the many different routes and walks in the ancient woodland including the added attraction of a new visitor centre and café and children's play area, it also provides an ideal location to place a Public Accessible Defibrillator.
"After all a sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime, any age and without any warning. Whether at home, at work, at leisure or playing sport.
"Every minute without prompt CPR and access to an AED, the chance of survival decreases by 10%. That's why it's so vitally important to have this lifesaving equipment readily available 24/7 across all communities and for a bystander to act immediately and without hesitation before the emergency services arrive."
Dr Mike Ferguson, JHMT Trustee said: "A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops beating. It occurs suddenly, has no warning signs and is painless. Without a beating heart a person will die within 10 minutes. Every week in the UK a witnessed cardiac arrest happens every 20 minutes and 12 people under the age of 35 die from unsuspected heart disease. The mortality rate in the UK is a dreadful 90%. A rapid response will give a collapsed person a greater chance of living and cut the mortality rate in half. It is impressive that the Leicester Sea Cadets are offering life-saving skills: CPR buys invaluable time to get hold of and use a defibrillator."
Lexii Hubbard, Chloe Schole, Gabrille Norman, Issac Gosling, Ryan Howard, Lewis Lansdowne, Alex Budding, Jenny Lin and Oliver Davies have each received Inspire Awards from local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) to help them reach their goals in sport, creative arts, music, community, and business.
Inspire Awards are small grants of up to £500 from the JHMT. The awards were set up to help young people aged 13-21 from Leicester and Leicestershire to fulfil their ambitions in the fields of music, arts, sports, entrepreneurism and community endeavour.

Restart a Heart Day: Life-saving defibrillators fitted around DMU campus
Three life-saving defibrillators are being fitted outside buildings on the De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) campus so they are accessible 24/7.
One of the defibrillators has been fitted to a wall outside the Queen's Building, facing Mill Lane, another outside Bede House, Western Road, and a third will soon appear in Magazine Square.
The new sites were identified and fitted with the defibrillators thanks to the work of DMU Health and Safety Officer Jon Grounds with the support of the Leicester heart charity The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), Leicester City Council's public health team and East Midlands Ambulance Service.

SADS WEEK 2023: JHMT/LCC/EMAS Partnership makes life-saving equipment accessible to public
A life-saving defibrillator has been fitted to the outside of Spence Street Sports Centre thanks to the support of local heart charity, the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).
Leicester City Council's public health team has been working with the trust and East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) to identify the locations of publicly accessible defibrillators in the city, so that any gaps can be filled.
The Spence Street area was identified as part of this work, and the equipment has now been prominently located on the front of the city council leisure centre to make it accessible to the local community all day, every day.
The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust has been set up to break the "silence" on SADS, create a new generation of young lifesavers and inspire young people.
The Trust was set up after the tragic loss of Joe Humphries who died while out jogging with his friend in October 2012.
The Inspire Awards are part of the Trust's long-term charitable aims to make a difference through Joe's legacy. The awards are designed to inspire young people to fulfil their potential and develop their talents.
