Wednesday 24th - Day 1 - Whinlatter to Greystoke
Posted: Tue, 20 Dec 2016
The descent from Whinlatter was thrilling. A very long, steep downhill through the forest. It was cool due to the shade which was a relief from the bright sun we had had all the way up to Whinlatter. We reached some great speeds, but I was cautious due to the damp roads from the nights rainfall.
When we reached the bottom of the hill it was a short three miles along the roads to Keswick. We whizzed through the town quickly, making the most of the flat roads. The road out of Keswick, however was another story. We weren't expecting the exit road, an extremely steep climb that evolved from a normal neighbourhood street to a high country road that looked out over Keswick. We did reach the top however and I finished a few energy bars because I really wasn't expecting the hill to be as harsh as it was.
The road continued upwards, but much more gently. The dual carriageway out of Keswick was down the hill to our left. We sort of followed this dual carriageway all the way out of the Lake District along roads either side of the valley that were much quieter and hillier.
We dropped down the hill and crossed the carriageway. Following the signs we reached a small track that was gated. This track was probably one of the nicest sections of the ride, I liked how it hugged the valley side and twisted and turned. It was a gentle climb however and eventually we had to cross a river and make our way back towards the centre of the valley and the dual carriageway. This was a smooth road that went down slowly, we coasted down and got our breaths back. We rejoined the carriageway and followed it for a few miles before seeing a sign for Greystoke.
We followed a road down towards the village and tried to find the support crew. We were greeted with some amazing sandwiches Sophie had made, lots of energy bars and LOTS of vaseline and sudocream for Josh.
