Students Plan Island Challenge in Honour of Joe
Posted: Wed, 11 Feb 2015
To mark RAG (Raise and Give) week, students from De Montfort's Demon Media society will be hosting 'Demon Island'.
Ten brave duos from 10 different university societies will be trapped on the island in De Montfort University's students' union from 9am on Thursday (12 Feb) until 9pm on Friday (13 Feb).
The islanders will face a series of challenges, games and struggles – all of which will be streamed live on Demon TV at www.demon-media.co.uk/demonisland – encouraging viewers to vote, donate and watch to find out who will become the ultimate conquerors of Demon Island.
Listeners to Demon FM – on 107.5FM in Leicester – will also be able to keep up with all the latest from the island.
All money raised by the event will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).
JHMT was set up in memory of Leicestershire teenager Joe Humphries, who collapsed and tragically died while out jogging. Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) – a group of lethal heart conditions and diseases which can cause sudden cardiac death in young people.
Since Joe's death in 2012, JHMT has campaigned tirelessly for greater understanding and awareness of SADS, as well as providing vital life-saving CPR training for schools and sports clubs.
The Trust also runs an awards scheme called Inspire aimed at helping young people to fulfill their potential by providing small grants for sporting, arts and community endeavours.
Demon TV station manager Hannah Gorzelak said: "We've got a massive team that has worked really hard to pull this event together. I can't wait to see how all the teams will cope on the island – I'm sure it will provide something fun to watch and listen to!
"The whole reason we're doing this is to raise money for these two incredible charities, so I hope people can head to our website and donate as generously as possible. We wanted to raise money for JHMT because we believe they do some fantastic work for a cause that isn't necessarily as mainstream as some others. We're hoping that by raising money we can help continue this great work and also raise awareness."
Steve Humphries, chair of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, said: "It means so much to us that DMU students have decided to support JHMT. The money they raise will be used for our vital work to reduce the shocking statistic that 12 young people aged 12-35 die each week in Britain from undiagnosed heart problems. Together, we can fight SADS."
