Inquest hearings are almost always in public.
If you choose to attend the inquest you can be accompanied by a supporter, for example a friend. Some bereaved people prefer not to attend, as the details of the death may be distressing. If you do attend some Coroners will offer you the opportunity to leave court while, for instance, the Pathologist gives evidence, if you would find it too difficult to hear this information.
The Coroner's office will tell you if the Coroner's Courts Support Service or a similar support service is available in your area and how they can help you. These independent services are provided by trained volunteers and are not available everywhere.
Witnesses (for example a doctor, police officer or eye witness) may be asked to attend to give evidence. Members of the public and media are normally allowed to attend the inquest.
